Creating an eLearning style guide
Gill Chester shares her ground rules and templates for creating an eLearning style guide to ensure consistency throughout.
Consistency in eLearning is really important and is the difference between a professional-looking resource and a Frankenstein-like experience. Having an eLearning style guide is a great way to agree your ground rules. Once these rules are established, your developers can focus on creating effective learning – rather than on the visual design of individual elements such as the size and colour of buttons.
You might want to include:
- What the eLearning player will look like, and what will be included
- Terminology used, for example, module/course, or how you reference/abbreviate your organisation
- Use and location of your logo
- Where menus appear and what they include
- How you present your titles and subtitles
- Fonts used and their size
- The colours you use and how you use them
- Types of images and how they’re presented
- Where instructional text is placed and examples for consistency
- How character dialogue should be presented
- Consistently used elements such as buttons, markers and icon style
- Types of media and how they’re presented

Templated Slides
You could also create a set of template slides that you regularly use in your modules. These might include:
1. Title/welcome
2. Learning objectives/ course content
3. Assessment/quiz
4. Summary and close
5. Exit instructions
6. Character dialogue/ branching scenarios
