What makes an LMS actually work?

The Children’s Society and Barnardo’s faced different challenges, but reached the same conclusion: a learning management system can do far more than host courses.

Both organisations used the Charity Learning Consortium’s Learning Management System (LMS) as the foundation for a wider overhaul of learning and development – bringing learning into one accessible place, supporting essential compliance and creating a more consistent experience for employees and volunteers.

The Children's Society

At The Children’s Society, the priority was clarity and engagement. Learning had become fragmented, valuable resources were difficult to find and organisational knowledge had been lost during a restructure.

After listening to employees and reviewing the available data, the L&D team repositioned the LMS as the branded “Learning Zone”. Content became easier to locate, learning felt connected to the organisation’s identity and strategy, and new starters quickly began using the platform as a trusted source of information.

t

The problem

Post-restructure, learning had no central ownership; staff couldn’t relocate content they’d already found.

The approach

Built a People Experience Framework and re-aligned the LMS with it, rather than treating the two as separate.

The journey

Listened first – exit interviews, survey data and content-access patterns shaped the redesign before any rebuild began.

The outcome

New starters adapted quickly; longer-serving staff are taking more time and need continued support.

LESSON: “Learning does not happen in isolation – lean into the organisational strategy.”

Barnardos

For Barnardo’s, the challenge was achieving more with a limited learning budget. Rather than investing in an expensive commercial platform, the charity built its new approach around the CLC’s Moodle-based LMS.

The platform now supports compliance training and auditable reporting, integrates with SharePoint, and brings together CLC courses with Barnardo’s own resources. An estimated 80% saving on platform costs also released funding for other priorities, including extending development opportunities to its 18,000 volunteers.

t

The problem

A commercial LMS upgrade would have cost roughly the same as two frontline practitioner salaries.

The approach

Reviewed the market, then chose to retain and better use existing infrastructure rather than replace it.

The journey

Redirected the resulting budget headroom toward volunteers and non-course learning – coaching, digital content, social learning.

The outcome

Estimated 80% saving on platform spend; compliance and reporting needs still fully met.

LESSON: “It allows us to do other things with our learning budget that we wouldn’t be able to do otherwise.”

Why an LMS matters

A well-used LMS gives an organisation a single, reliable home for learning. People know where to go, managers can see what has been completed, and L&D teams can provide a consistent experience across different roles, departments and locations.

But technology alone isn’t the answer. The strongest results come when the platform is shaped around the people using it: aligned with organisational goals, clearly branded, easy to navigate and supported by relevant content. Used in this way, an LMS becomes more than a course library. It provides the infrastructure for induction, compliance, continuous development, knowledge sharing and blended learning – while giving L&D teams the insight and control they need to keep improving.

Our LMS supports compliance, boosts engagement, and simplifies training for everyone. It’s affordable, flexible, and easy to use, creating a learning experience that is both streamlined and tailored to your staff and volunteers.
